3. Decide what skills are needed to successfully run the business

A successful social enterprise requires a Management Committee or Board of Management (“Board”) that possesses vision, leadership and management skills. It is crucial that the Board work together effectively as a team, otherwise these skills may not emerge when required.

It is also important that the full-time manager of the enterprise possesses the relevant management skills and experience to successfully manage the business on a day-to-day basis.

Use the basic checklist of skills to see if your organisation is placed to successfully run a social enterprise from start-up onwards!

Your day-to-day manager will also need to possess the relevant skills and experience in relation to managing people, managing finances and, depending on the chosen business sector, relevant sectoral knowledge and experience also.
